MS EXCEL-BASED MODULE FOR SIMULATION STUDY OF LINEAR CODES APPLIED IN THE COURSE “CODING IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS”

Adriana Borodzhieva

This publication describes the developed MS EXCEL-based module for simulation study of linear codes that will be used in the course “Coding in Telecommunications Systems”, d as elective in the curriculum of the specialty “Telecommunication Systems” for the “Bachelor” educational qualification degree in University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev”. The application allows the study of linear codes based on the generator and control matrices. The module contains 24 options for choosing a generator matrix of a linear (6,3)-code. The process of obtaining the control matrix on the basis of the selected generator matrix is illustrated. Laws of encoding and laws of checking of linear codes are derived. The application allows to follow the process of obtaining the codeword at a given information sequence, as well as the process of detecting and correcting single error at a given codeword. The developed training module aims to increase students’ interest in studying the course “Coding in Telecommunications Systems”. The module can be used for automating the process of generating individual tasks of students during practical exercises. Future work plans the extension of the module including other linear (n, k)-codes, as well as Hamming codes.
