The article outlines the magnitude of the transportation system and defines its mission. Factors affecting transportation system functioning are pointed out along with the ways it affects our life. Methods for improving traffic conditions are systematized with emphasis on intelligent transportation systems. It is shown that for achieving optimal results from this system it is necessary to accomplish traffic projects with both long-term and short-term effect on traffic quality. Different sensors for real-time data logging of vehicle flow parameters are considered, because this information is essential for analyzing and planning of traffic conditions and projects.
