![]() MODERNIZATION OF A TRACTION POWER SUBSTATION WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A STATION CONTROL SYSTEM – PART I
Todor Lalev Rectifier stations (RS) are a key component of the traction power supply system (TPS) in urban transport, ensuring the conversion of alternating current into direct current, which is necessary for powering the catenary network (CN) and electric transport vehicles, such as trams and trolleybuses (ETV). Considering the issues related to particulate matter air pollution and the green transition, electric urban transport plays a crucial role as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional means of transportation.
Until 1989, this mode of transport in Bulgaria developed rapidly, with infrastructure for electric transport built in over 21 major cities, and operational electric transport systems established in 16 of them. Unfortunately, between 1989 and 2015, not only was the already-built infrastructure in five cities never put into operation, but the existing and under the operation transport companies in six cities bankruptcy. As a result, as of today, only 10 cities in the Republic of Bulgaria maintain an operational electric transport system. Due to the large scope of the study, the report is divided into two parts: Part I analyzes the current state and challenges of the transport infrastructure. Part II explores modernization opportunities and potential improvements to the system.
