STRESSES IN TRAM WHEEL TIRES WITH FLAT SPOTS AND MATERIAL BUILD-UP ON THE ROLLING SURFACE

This paper examines the problem of stresses arising in tram wheel tires when there is simultaneous formation of flat spots and build-up of material on the rolling surface. This phenomenon occurs when the wheelset is temporarily locked (skids) and then unlocked. The material that is removed from the rolling surface while the wheel is skidding immediately readheres just beyond the newly formed flat spot. As the wheel continues rolling on the rails, the wheel tire is subjected to two successive impacts in a very short time - first on the deposited material, then on the flat spot. The paper determines the stresses in the wheel tire under various operating speeds. The stresses are ana-lyzed both in distinct phases of the process and as effectively concurrent, given the short duration in which they arise.
