ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLES - AN INNOVATION FOR THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN THE URBAN TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN BULGARIA

Ivailo Stoilov, Gergana Yakimova, Kalina Semova

Road transport, including urban public transport, generates the most emissions of harmful substances. In the context of the European policies to reduce emissions, this paper examines innovations in public transport. A statistical study of the current availability of zero-emission transport vehicles in Bulgarian cities is conducted and available charging infrastructure in Sofia Municipality is investigated.

Global trends of transition towards ”greener” and environmentally friendly transport in the last decade lead to a continuous increase in the number of electric buses in Europe and in Bulgaria in particular. These vehicles are considered a cleaner transport alternative as they have a lower environmental impact than conventional buses with internal combustion engines. In practice, battery-only or capacitor-only electric buses are used, as well as so-called plug-in hybrid models that can switch to standard fuel when the energy in the battery fully consumed.

The paper discusses main sources of funding for zero-emission vehicles and charging infrastructure, as well as future expectations and outcomes are noted.

Contribution of renewing the existing public transport fleet and the development of charging infrastructure according to the three pillars of sustainable development is outlined.
