The passenger railway transport has got an important role in the transportation systems of almost all European countries providing the option to the travelling to carry overland transports on short, medium and long distances. In the current report the development of the passenger railway transport in Europe is analysed. Trends are observed on the number of transported passengers, the transport work performed and the changes in the average transport distance of one passenger. The period analysed (from 2011 till 2020) covers the period after the recovery of the economies of the European countries from the world financial and economic crisis and finishes with the entering into the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main goal of the research is to follow the trends of development of the passenger railway transports on the territory of Europe and to give an account of the influence of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic onto the passenger railway transport of the European countries.
