: The effect of the loading character on the life has been little studied and cannot be found in references known up to now. The paper examines:

· general loading of machines as a complete spectrum of loading;

· narrow loading as partial spectra of divided complete spectrum of loading - in the sense of narrow non-covering or little covering each other spectra of loading.

The effect of differentiated loading on the average life of machines and their units has been studied. The paper presents an interesting result: the operation by means of partial spectra of loading prolongs the life of machines. The result has been proved:

· The paper presents and compares a theoretical examination in the life of transport machines: with partial spectra and complete spectrum of loading.

· The run between repairs of diesel locomotives has been examined statistically.
