he main purpose of the present paper is to study the importance of the process of digitalization for the development of the transport sector of Bulgaria. The analysis is based on the examination of the process of implementation and harmonization of the intelligent transport systems amongst the various transport modes.

Statistical methods as well as the methods for analysis and synthesis will be used in the publication. They will be necessary in order to be outlined the benefits of the speeded up electronic data exchange amongst rolling stock’s communication and information technologies of inland, water and air transport. There will be highlighted the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities for the development of the transport sector as a result of the implementation and exploitation of the intelligent transport systems.

The findings of the paper are as follows: First of all, the relationship between process of digitalization and economics of transport will be studied. At the same time, there will be outlined the opportunities for transition to Industry 4.0 in the transport sector. Secondly, there will be assessed the economic, social and ecologic effects for the development of the transport sector as a result of its digitalization. Lastly, it will be identified to what extent, the issue, concerning the digitalization of the transport sector is discussed in the strategic documents and national policies for the development of the transport system of Bulgaria till 2030.
