MODERN AC ELECTRIC DRIVES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Vladislav Boynovski, Ivan Milenov

Due to the stringent environmental standards in recent years, car manufacturers are increasingly investing in the development of electric drive systems. The report examines the current trends in the development of AC drives for electric and hybrid vehicles. Comparison is made between the different types of electric drives and their technical parameters and characteristics, as well as the inherent advantages and disadvantages. All major types of electric AC drives for electric cars are considered: synchronous electric motors, synchronous magnets with permanent magnets, asynchronous motors, and jet engines. A study has been conducted on hybrid and pure electric vehicles available on the market and the types of drives used in the most popular electric vehicles and hybrids are presented. The comparative analysis shows that currently the most widely available electric vehicles are powered by synchronous motors with permanent magnets. It is shown that this choice is not accidental and is predetermined by the great advantages these engines have. Only asynchronous motors with no power limitation are d for very high power drives.
