ADAPTIVE CONTROL OF THE WIND TURBINE SYSTEM

The utilization of energy resources from renewable energy sources is a means of achieving sustainable energy development and minimizing harmful environmental impacts. In this direction, the use of wind energy is a matter of great importance. Various wind generators find wider application and one of them has been designed and built in the Todor Kableshkov University of Transport. A wind turbine with a variable angle of propeller attack has been designed and developed. The report presents a way of realizing this type of construction, as well as the special features of the automation in the control of the electrical drives by a programmable logic controller (PLC). Main factors influencing on the wind generator efficiency are systemized. Complicated propeller design puts higher demands on the control system but allows adequate adaptation of the turbine to unstable wind speeds and achieving maximum facility performance. It also allows for the reduction of mechanical overloads at wind speeds that significantly outweigh the facility`s capabilities. The operation of the system leads to the saving of electricity, but also creats conditions for research and tests by PhD students and lecturers as well as training the students under the programmes Power Engineering and Electrical Equipment, Renewable Energy Sources, Electric vehicles, etc.
