CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS FOR THE PASSIVE SAFETY OF PASSENGER WAGONS

- The paper presents the results of analysis of the railway accidents in Bulgaria during the last 10 years. The emphasis is put on crash-related incidents. It describes also the existing passive safety concepts of passenger carriages developed in compliance with the ments of European Standard EN 15227 and American Standard AAR S-580, which is for impact resistance and intended to protect people in the locomotive cab in case of collision. The aim to apply the standards is to minimize the risks of adverse effects in the design and operation of modern rolling stock.

Based on the examinations made, some constructive solutions of passive safety systems are justified as suitable to implement in passenger carriages belonging to HOLDING BDZ EAD - BDZ - Passenger Transport EOOD. Particular attention is paid to the buffers that first take impact loads of vehicles with collision. It is proposed to use ”CRASH” elements as essential part of the measures to increase passive safety. The integration of railways and development of safe rail transport without national frontiers as one of the EU main priorities have imposed the need for uniform European legislation in the field of technical ments, including those for achievement of greater safety. An important trend in that aspect is to implement ”CRASH” systems both for newly-built passenger carriages and vehicles in service.
