INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS DEPLOYMENT IN AIR TRANSPORT

Christina Nikolova

The main aspect of the deployment of intelligent transport systems in air transport is related to the air traffic management. With regards to this, a program on the air traffic management system modernization - SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) has been launched on the European level. SESAR - project is a technological pillar of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative with the main aim being the development of unique and innovative technologies and solutions, providing the fulfilment of the SES purposes. SESAR is an instrument for coordination and concentration of all scientific research for air traffic management, consolidating the efforts of wide variety of experts working on new generation of air traffic management systems.

The paper clarifies the main aspects of ITS deployment in air transport, as well as it describes the contents of different stages, identifies main stakeholders and presents an overview of the results of SESAR project on the European level with regards to the achievement of sustainable development of this mode of transport. Other important issues discussed in the paper are: the actual initiatives realized within the financial semester of the European Parliament and specifying financial instruments for ITS research and innovation in the air traffic management.
