The automotive transport plays an important role in raising the competitiveness of the national economy and also for transportation services of the population. Its effective usage depends heavily on the level of development of the road infrastructure.

In the current report analysis are made about the level of provisioning of highways, first class, second class and third class roads of the areas in the Republic of Bulgaria. The areas in Bulgaria are the main administrative-territorial units in the acting territorial organisation in the country. They play an important role and are also a factor for the building and functioning of an effective and democratic territorial governance.

The main goal of the research is to make an attempt to accurately classify the areas in Bulgaria based on their level of provisioning of road infrastructure. By doing this the areas with relatively well build road infrastructure will stand out from those with weakly developed road network. Based on the classification made motivated proposals are made for further development, modernization and rehabilitation of roads all proposals directed to reducing the significant disproportion between the different areas in the country.
