The majority of transport enterprises in Bulgaria pertain to the small and medium business. In order to survive and successfully develop their activities they should be properly managed. Therefore, managers are d to master and apply effective managerial techniques. For this purpose, undertaking managers should have at their disposal detailed and trustworthy information on the activity carried out. Such information is generally provided by the financial accounting. However, that information is not adequate for an appropriate decision - making. What is needed is a planning and reporting system which is referred to as managerial accounting. The latter is connected with the study of revenues and expenditures with a view to optimizing the use of resources through planning, control and analysis of the undertaking.

The present paper aims at clarifying the place, role and importance of the managerial accounting in order to improve the management of business activity in the transport undertaking.
