RESEARCH ON THE STRENGTH STATE OF STRUCTURES OF TOW HOOKS OF RAILWAY VEHICLES
Vanio Ralev, Dobrinka Atmadzhova Towing and shunting equipment of railway vehicles are the main and responsible parts for connecting the vehicles and transmitting tensile and compressive forces that occur during train movement or during shunting activities. Conditions are created for obtaining larger longitudinal vibrations and dynamic forces in the train set. The main element in the towing equipment is the tow hook. The article presents a calculation method for determining the strength state of unified designs of tow hooks of railway vehicles. The main designs of tow hooks for application in wagons and locomotives for 1435 mm gauge are indicated. This publication indicates the methods for calculating the fatigue strength of elements of railway vehicles, such as the unified method of UIC/ORE according to the Goodman diagram, recommended in the bulletin B12/RP17 of ERRI. The studied structures are modeled in the Solid Works software product. Loads regulated in the international documents EN 15566 and UIC 520 are adopted. The types of damage in operational conditions are considered. Different designs of tow hooks are modeled and FEM analysis is performed. The strength state of tow hook designs regulated in the international documents EN 15566 and UIC 520 and a newly designed structure are determined. It is found that the radius of the transition where the shape of the drawbar hook of the type “B” TC changes from a rectangular cross-section to a cylindrical one is 4 mm, as prescribed in the EN 15566:2016 and UIC 520 standards, and is a likely location for fatigue cracking.
