THE EUROPEAN STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY AND THE PROBLEMS OF IMPROVING TRANSPORT CONNECTIVITY EUROPE-ASIA

Antoaneta Kirova, Martin Todorov

The aim of this paper is to present the state of intercontinental transport connectivity between Europe and Asia in the light of the EPEP initiative. On the one hand, the EC Sustainable Mobility Strategy and the Action Plan, including 82 initiatives, will guide the guidelines that the EC must implement to reduce emissions by 90% by 2050, ensured by a smart, competitive, safe, accessible and affordable transport system. On the other hand, China`s stated objectives for the BRI refer to a broad intention to promote international understanding and cooperation with participating countries. At the same time, to a large extent, the feasibility of these objectives directly depends on the capabilities of international logistics and in particular on the transport connectivity between Europe and Asia, as the intensity of trade relations implies a high level of demand for freight transport between the two regions, therefore, efficient and sustainable transport connectivity has an impact on the overall movement of goods and services between the EU and Asia, which in turn has an impact on economic growth, competitiveness and increased entrepreneurial activity. Predicting the impact of the EPEP on the transport network is challenging, as there is no clear definition or program, and it is not possible to determine the volume of trade generated by the initiative within the overall volume between the Far East and Europe. In contrast to the existing challenges, there is the opportunity that high-speed rail transport creates for the connections between China and Europe, which are a hallmark of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative and play an increasingly important role in promoting open cooperation, mutual benefit and economic integration between the participating countries. The research methodology is based on secondary research, data analysis and formulation of conclusions.
