ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF AIR TRAFFIC: OPPORTUNITIES FOR OPTIMIZATION OF AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
Ivan Trayanov Yordanov The performance of air traffic management (ATM) systems plays a decisive role in the economic and environmental sustainability of aviation. As airspace demand continues to grow, many European regions, including Bulgaria’s Sofia FIR, are facing mounting challenges related to fragmentation, congestion, and outdated infrastructure. These issues not only raise operational costs but also contribute to delays and increased emissions, undermining both service quality and environmental goals.
This report explores the concept of economic efficiency within the air transport sector, focusing on how ATM optimization can reduce costs, improve capacity, and support long-term sustainability. Key performance indicators—such as route length, delay rates, and throughput—are analyzed in the context of current practices, with particular attention given to the limitations imposed by legacy systems and uncoordinated national procedures. The analysis highlights several practical opportunities for improvement, including the deployment of Free Route Airspace, the integration of AI-based decision-support tools, and the implementation of 4D trajectory systems. Additionally, it examines the importance of structural reforms, such as Functional Airspace Blocks, and the role of human expertise in adapting to new technologies and procedures. Findings suggest that a multidimensional approach—combining infrastructure modernization, cross-border collaboration, and workforce development—is essential to achieve a more responsive, cost-effective, and environmentally aligned ATM framework. Continued cooperation between regulatory authorities, ANSPs, and international organizations will be key in ensuring that European airspace can meet the demands of tomorrow’s aviation landscape.
