BUILDING A HYDROGEN SUPPLY CHAIN

Vasil Koprivshtenov

Conventional fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, are a cheap and proven source of energy. However, they have a certain limit and may be exhausted in the near future. For this reason, attention is now being paid to alternative fuels, such as electricity and green hydrogen, which is a widely recognized future energy carrier due to its non-polluting properties and high energy density. In order to realize hydrogen mobility in the future, it is essential to build a complete green hydrogen supply chain that can turn it into a key energy carrier for vehicles. In this report, we attempt to create a variant of the green hydrogen supply chain in Europe and Bulgaria, including storage, transportation and utilization technologies. The climate in Europe is not conducive to the operation of renewable energy sources (RES) for the production of electricity. This suggests that a large part of the ecological hydrogen needed for the continent – be it green or white (naturally obtained in nature) – will be imported. A basic model of a supply chain on the European continent is presented. A model is built for the transportation of hydrogen from the ports of entry to Bulgaria to the places of possible consumption in different parts of Bulgaria. The challenges in building a hydrogen supply chain from a technical and economic point of view and the prospects for its future development are discussed.
