THE BULGARIAN AUTOMOTIVE MARKET IN TRANSITION TOWARDS A CLEANER ALTERNATIVE

Teodora Todorova, Gergana Yakimpva

This article presents a study of the automotive market, including the rapidly growing segment of electric vehicles, within the context of the European Union’s policy framework. A statistical analysis has been conducted, covering newly registered motor vehicles in the Republic of Bulgaria and the EU-27, with a particular focus on vehicles powered by alternative fuels. The prospects for charging infrastructure development are also examined. Global shift over the past decade towards greener and more environmentally sustainable transport have led to a continuous increase in the number of electric vehicles across Europe, and especially in Bulgaria. These vehicles are considered a cleaner transportation alternative due to their reduced environmental impact.

In the context of Bulgaria’s transition towards cleaner alternatives, the paper presents and analyses data from Sofia France Auto Group, which ranked third in new vehicle sales in the country in 2024.

The paper also outlines key elements of the European Union’s comprehensive strategy for the development of publicly accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
